Yu Gi Oh the Abridged Series

Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series is a parody online show made by LittleKuriboh and hosted on YouTube. Each episode is around four or five minutes long, satirically summarizing one or sometimes multiple half-hour episodes of the Yu-Gi-Oh! english anime.

Interview with LittleKuriboh

Jerrod: How did you think of the idea of doing Yu Gi oh the Abridged Series?

LittleKuriboh: I had this crazy vision that involved baseball, Kevin Costner, and the words "If you dub it, they will come"... No wait, that'd be Field of Dreams.

It's not a very interesting story. I used to dub my voice onto TV shows when I was in my mid-teens, usually things like "Babylon 5" or "Mission Impossible" since they always seemed to be on when I had some spare time on my hands. They were funny (to me, at least) so I cherished them. I still have one or two kicking about, but I'll be darned if I can find them.

Anyway, I guess that stuff stuck with me, because eventually I decided I wanted to make my own anim dub. And I'm very familiar with Yu-Gi-Oh and its story and characters, yadda yadda, so that seemed like a safe bet. But there were already lots of dubs kicking around, so I wanted to do something different.

It was important to me that just about anybody could sit down, watch it, and understand what it was all about. I didn't want to make something that only appealed to fans of the show. So I ended up making an abridged version of the series. And initially, that was all I focused on, just trimming the show to a ridiculously short length whilst retaining the plot. But eventually it "evolved", I guess you could say, and it's become much more of a wacky spoof thing.

I never really intended it to last more than one episode, but once I got some positive feedback for the first one, I decided to commit myself to doing more. And that's how it all came to be, I suppose.

Jerrod: Do you really do all the voices on the show?

LittleKuriboh: Yes, I really do all the voices. I used to do impressions when I was in school - I was that one kid in the class who survived by trying to make everybody laugh.

I'd never really tried to do the Yu-Gi-Oh voices before I sat down to record the first Abridged Series episode. So if I sound a little rough around the edges in that one, you'll know why. People seem to think I got Kaiba bang on, though. So what do I know?

Jerrod: Do you like Yu Gi Oh? Like the games, Anime and cards?

LittleKuriboh: I love Yu-Gi-Oh with a nerdy passion. Never actually played the card game - unless you count playing Nightmare Troubadour on the DS. I do own a few sparse cards, but they're nothing to shout about.

I'm big into the anim, and I actually believe that I couldn't have made the Abridged Series unless I was a huge fan. If you try and spoof something because you hate it, I don't think it'll be nearly as appealing or as fun...

Jerrod: Who’s your Favorite Yu Gi Oh Character?

LittleKuriboh: That's a toughie. I'm fond of them all. Probably Yugi. I know it sounds lame, but he's a genuinely nice character, and he's the kind of person I aspire to be. Closely followed by Yami Bakura, because he kicks ass. And I also aspire to kick ass.

A lot of people seem to think I'm down on Bakura because of his treatment in the Abridged Series, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Jerrod: Do you write all the jokes by your self or do friends/family help?

LittleKuriboh: It's all me. So yeah, that means I'm responsible for all the lame gags too.

Jerrod: We’ve all seen the Yu-Gi-Oh: Abridged Movie Trailer. Are you thinking of doing a Abridged Movie or is it just a One time joke.

LittleKuriboh: I'd certainly like to tackle the movie, but I can't make any promises. It's up in the air. If I were to do it, however, I would want to set aside a month or two to write it - just to make sure it was special. So don't expect it anytime soon, I'm afraid.

Jerrod: How long are you planning to make the abridged series (like are you going to do all the Eps of Yu Gi Oh or stopping at the end of Battle city?)

LittleKuriboh: It's gonna be as long as I can make it without beating a dead horse. When people stop enjoying it, I stop making it. If possible, I'd love to do the entire series.

Jerrod: What Program do you use to edit the Episodes?

LittleKuriboh: Usually Windows Movie Maker, since I've become so familiar with it. But recently I've been using Ulead VideoStudio 10 for some of the visual effects. Not totally used to it yet though, so it's mostly Windows Movie Maker. That and a lot of patience.

Jerrod: Are you planning on doing another Rex & Weevil Movie Review?

LittleKuriboh: I've got one in the pipeline - they'll be watching Advent Children next, with any luck. No ETA on it as of yet, I'm afraid.

Jerrod: What’s your Favorite Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series Episode that you have done so far?

LittleKuriboh: I'm completely the wrong person to be asking that question, heh. I'm not a fan of my work. I watch the episodes and I cringe.

The first episode is my sentimental favourite, because it reminds me of when I was making it thinking that maybe ten or twenty people would enjoy it. But I guess the one I enjoy the most is episode six, because I'm very fond of that scene with Mako Tsunami. I almost regret not using him more. (Jerrod:Ep 6 is my favorite too becuase of Mako)

And thats all 10 questions maybe in a year I'll do another Interview and I cant wait for this weeks episode. (now Im really going back to bed)
